Ecce Homo, 1978

Oil on canvas, 136x103cm
This is Cyril's last self portrait. Life size, It is one of several nudes Cyril painted of himself a year before he died. He said he wanted to "show all of me, my strengths and weaknesses, warts and all" . This included smoking a cigarette, a habit he took up again after several decades against doctors' orders.
In this painting Cyril compared himself to Christ, with the two other portraits representing 'the two thieves'.
He considered himself a prophet in the wilderness of figurative art.
